Discover Southington CT

We are excited to announce our new orthodontic practice for Southington, a prosperous, picturesque town in west central Connecticut about 20 miles southwest of Hartford and 80 miles northeast of New York City, is in a valley of many apple orchards and mountains to the east and the west. The 2010 Census reported a population of 43,069, up from 39,728 in 2000.

History

Southington has many vintage homes in various architectural styles. The National Register of Historic Places lists many of them. The oldest, built by Jonathan Root in 1720, still stands as a law office at the corner of North Main and Mill streets. The Root House was in use as a tavern when General Washington stopped on his way to a meeting of local American independence leaders in Wethersfield on the Connecticut River now adjacent to Hartford about 15 miles northeast from Southington.

Southington formally incorporated as a town in 1779. In June 1781, French troops under General Rochambeau’s command encamped near the Asa Barnes Tavern in the Marion section of Southington, now an historic district. The officers sojourned in the tavern, the troops bivouacked on a hill on the other side of the road since known as French Hill, and a marker on the east side of Marion Avenue commemorates the French campsite. Rochambeau revisited Barnes Tavern on his return march from Yorktown in October 1782.

Local Color

Each year, Southington celebrates an Apple Harvest Festival, a tradition with a town parade, carnival rides and games, musical performances, and specialty foods prepared by local churches, the Southington fire and police departments, the Southington Rotary chapter, and the Southington Jaycees.

About 500 feet west on Mill Street from the Root House is the Farmington Canal Heritage Linear Trail section along the Quinnipiac River. When completed, this scenic greenway built over an old rail line will run from New Haven on Long Island Sound 84 miles north to Northampton, Massachusetts, following the route of the historic Farmington Canal excavated between 1825 and 1835 and in brief use until eclipsed by the railroad in 1847..

The Mount Southington ski area on the west side of town has operated for 50 years with four chairlifts to slopes and terrain for beginners and experts. The latest in snowmaking technology and constant landscape maintenance keep conditions primed for full enjoyment all across the mountain.

Education

Southington has eight elementary schools, two middle schools, a high school, and an alternate school, ALTA, for grades 9-12. Southington High School enrolls 2,200+ students, 90 percent of whom pursue higher education. Southington also has three parochial schools for kindergarten through grade 8, for kindergarten through grade 5, and for kindergarten through grade 12.
