Team Demas Orthodontics are one of the best Orthodontists CT has to offer. We recommend braces to many of our patients. Patients of any age can enjoy straighter teeth with the help of our Orthodontist in CT. So what are the benefits of braces? The following list has been compiled to inform you of ten benefits to getting braces that you may not have known about previously.

Benefit #1: Cleaner Teeth
With your crooked teeth straightened, you are able to clean the entire surface of your teeth whereas once before they overlapped and were not getting fully cleaned with the toothbrush. With straight teeth, your risk of developing tartar buildup is reduced by being able to brush more thoroughly.

Benefit #2: Easier to Floss
With straightened teeth, flossing becomes a much easier task to perform on a daily basis, which is what orthodontists and dentists recommend for healthy teeth and gums. With crooked teeth, floss cannot get fully in between teeth to clean out food particles which, if left behind can cause major dental problems.

Benefit #3: Less Tooth Crowding
With orthodontics, the use of braces to straighten teeth is often combined with removing teeth as well. This reduces crowding of the teeth, which could be one of the causes of the crookedness. Once the teeth are no longer crowded, the braces can move the remaining teeth into their proper place and the result is a smile of bright and shining, straight teeth!

Benefit #4: Less Tooth Decay
Straight teeth are easier to brush and floss, which reduces the risk of tooth decay. When teeth are in need of straightening, they do not receive the proper attention when cleaning simply because a toothbrush or floss cannot reach through crooked teeth to clean them. Straightened teeth are less prone to tooth decay which will only require more dental work in the future.

Benefit #5: Fewer Cavities
Crooked teeth are more prone to cavities because of how difficult it is to clean them. Even a professional cleaning can’t reach the entire set of teeth when they are crooked, which leads to tooth decay and eventually cavities. If you get a cavity, you will require a filling, or possibly a root canal and a crown which can be very expensive. Straight teeth are much less likely to form tooth decay because at home you can clean and floss them better, and your dental specialist can do professional cleanings much more effectively with straight teeth.

Benefit #6: Healthier Gums
Because straight teeth are easier to floss properly every day, there is less of a risk that food particles will get caught in your gums. These are called “pockets” and pockets can get really bad if you can’t floss your teeth well every day. This leads to inflamed gum tissue and eventually, if not properly treated, periodontal disease. With periodontal disease your gums can actually become too weak to hold your teeth and this causes permanent tooth loss.

Benefit #7: Less Tartar and Plaque
With crooked teeth, like we mentioned before, if you can’t floss or brush properly because your teeth overlap or are too crowded, this can cause all kinds of problems. Another problem is the buildup of tartar and plaque. Tartar and plaque form on the teeth and especially along the gum line, which is yet another cause of periodontal disease or gum disease. If your teeth get a large amount of tartar and plaque built up, your dental professional will have to do what’s called a deep cleaning, which is very uncomfortable and sometimes requires sedation. If you require a deep cleaning, that tells you that your teeth, mouth, and gums are in serious condition. Straight teeth makes all that extra dental work unnecessary because you can clean your teeth properly, and only need a regular professional cleaning every six months or so. Regular cleanings, especially if you have good at-home care are easy breezy.

Benefit #8: Stronger Profile
One of the many benefits of braces is that they correct over-bites and under-bites. Over-bites and under-bites can affect the way your face is shaped because of how your teeth are positioned. An over-bite makes the chin look too small or weak. An under-bite makes the lower jaw jut forward too much. Straightening and properly aligning your teeth with braces corrects your bite so that it is perfectly even, making your teeth line up and your jawline where it is supposed to be. Look at some of your Orthodontist’s before and after photos of patients before and after they have had braces. The results are amazing!

Benefit #9: Prettier Smile
We know that getting braces is not a lot of fun, but it is much better for the health of your mouth if your teeth are straight. Straight and even teeth also make the prettiest smiles. You will no longer be self-conscious about your teeth on picture day or during your time at school. With nice, straight teeth you will be proud of how good your smile looks, and will smile more often! We promise, getting braces now will totally be worth it, you’ll see.

Benefit #10: Whiter Teeth

When your teeth are crooked, the spaces where they overlap are going to be naturally darker in color, mainly because over time they have not been cleaned as well as the other tooth surfaces. With crooked teeth, no amount of whitening will correct that, but with straight teeth, you can whiten your teeth very easily. There are whitening kits you can use at home, or get them professionally whitened.
